I heard the sled is in need of a crankshaft. I saw this over on the John Deere site

340/S Replacement Crankshafts
by ICCSF 108 on Fri Jul 31, 2009 6:57 pm

After a long search, I have picked up a few cranks that Jerome & I have determined will probably work for a replacement crank for the 340/S motors. These cranks came out of the older CCW/Kioritz Piston ported 400 & 440 motors. The rods & lower rod bearings aren't as beefy as the OEM 340/S cranks & the crank is 0.050" shorter on the mag side as the OEM 340/S cranks are but everything else cks out to be the same.. SOOO in a pinch we believe they will work..

Yep, they will work in "a pinch".  But we really want to have the correct crankshaft with the beefier rods.  They have an R1 stamped on them.  We don't want to sell an original cross country racer without having the proper guts in the motor.  We may have a good lead on one now.....fingers are crossed.

Sounds good I agree, but it is a last resort if needed.

I have always thought that it wasnt the size of the rod that mattered???  It is what it is in that counts??

Just found the site. As Rainville noted, it is a bit much trying to track this project across 4 web sites!

I believe we warned you guys when you started this project, that it was going to be a challenge.  Parts are VERY hard to find for this sled, especially when you are trying to source them in under a year.  It seems to me that if it weren't for Joe Rainville and Kenny Heins, this project would have been in big trouble.

I have two 340S sleds that I bought in the proverbial basket, but they turned out to be complete!  And it has still been a huge project to bring them back to life.
The Deere guys appreciate what you are doing, we know how tough this is.

400Brian,
Put the suspension together a few nights back and everything popped right together.  Your bushings worked great with the new wheels.   Your rebuilt wheels look awesome!
This suspension was a basket case to begin with, but now it is great.  Besides the 1/2" thick plates and gussets welded everywhere we found weird things like the track adjuster bolts were made from a threaded rod and were bent but after total assembly the correct bolts were found.  They were used to bolt the slides on.
I am happy to be finally done with our portion of the build and will be even happier to see it bring in some interest when it comes to selling it.

Pete

Glad to hear it.  Just a reminder, as I don't remember if we discussed this, the cap screws that retain the suspension shafts need to be locktited in at the minimum.
On the front shaft, we've been talking about safety wiring them, because 2 guys had them loosen up at last Feb's Ride with the Champs. One guy lost the entire front shaft and wheels!

Super!  That can looks great.  However you did it, nice work!  My guess is that you had to cut the end off to get in there and repair it and then stitch it back up?

This project is really coming along great. Clack had me check into t source for a correct crankshaft to replace the one "borrowed" to the project.
Nope. So far I've struck out.
We also need to find some more "funding" for this project, Anybody tired of laying on their cash stuffed mattress? I'm going to send a Lil donation to this very worthwhile project first thing Monday and I encourage everyone to help out if they can.

Thank you to all who have helped bring this piece of history back to life.

Just so everyone knows, any donations will be given directly to the body man.  His time in the project has been very intense.  I would say he has at least 20 hours of labor and lots of materials involved.  He was willing to donate all of his time, but that is asking a lot of anyone.  So, I did tell him that there would be some cash coming his way.

We may keep about $50 out for snacks and drinks at Lloyds, but otherwise it will all go to Mike Anderson for the incredible work he has done.
